On 16 September, our Institute organised the second study tour of the year. The tour was attended by a group of more than 40 participants from various companies, including Cheung Kong Asset Holdings, Cushman & Wakefield, Hang Lung Properties, Hong Kong Housing Society, Hong Yip Service, Kai Shing Management Services, KPMG, Link REIT, Phoenix Property Investors, Sunbase International and Sun Hung Kai Properties
We were greeted on arrival with so much warmth and felt right at home by the management team and staff of UniWorld in Longhua (龍華壹方天地 ). The visit started off with a project masterplan presentation held on an observatory office floor with a 360-degree unobstructed panoramic views of Longhua District (1). We then made our way down to the 5 zones of UniWorld which were opened between 2017 and 2022. Not only did we take an opportunity to glance at those 1,000 brands within the largest retail development (GFA 600,000sqm) of Shenzhen, but we also witnessed how retailtainment / experiential retail is the future of shopper engagement. Towards the end of the visit, we made our way through a food street to a Nanjinese restaurant where an incredibly filling group lunch was served (2). This was a great way to wind down this action-packed visit.

Hong Kong's recovery has been gaining momentum ever since the reopening of its borders, with a discernible trend emerging in the latter half of this year. Overseas retail and food and beverage (F&B) groups are increasingly signing large lease properties in prime shopping districts, signaling the picking up of the Hong Kong market. People of all ages got in on the action in a sea of cheers shouting their hearts out. My emotions ran so high that they took a long time to subside. Even though the pandemic has changed the way we interact with one another, it has not stopped our enthusiasm. Our institute successfully held the 16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 17 Dec 2020. At the AGM, our Chairman Mr. Baldwin Ko expressed his gratitude to the concerted efforts and continued hard work of all the members, while adapting to new working conditions put in place by the board and committee members. Additionally, the board members approved a freezing of the membership fee for the year 2021–2022.

This issue begins with news that are worth celebrating – 11 tenders showed their support for the Charity Tender session at the ISCM’s 15th Anniversary Annual Dinner held in April, raising a total of HKD 180,000 which will be donated to our beneficiary – Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited. Besides, the ISCM Greater Bay Area tour was successfully held recently in Guangzhou, providing an eye-opening experience for our participants. This issue also explores the possibilities of launching an all-in-one membership programme for malls under the same roof, allowing more exclusive privileged benefits, loyalty and rewards programmes, for instance, can enhance consumers’ sense of belonging and loyalty. On the other hand, the smartphone app “RED” has successfully drawn attention in the Mainland in terms of its unique one-stop sharing and shopping experience. With over 200m active users, RED has also become a ‘start-making platform’ – creating an ideal online site for launching retail campaigns.

This is a special edition to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of ISCM. This issue begins with a message from our Chairman Mr. Baldwin Ko on reviewing his joining the Institute as one of the founding members and his taking up the chairmanship in the past 2 years. For the second quarter, the spotlight should be on our 15th Anniversary Annual Dinner to be held on 26 April and here we share with you a prelude.
