Review Seminar: BIM for Shopping Mall - Enabling Collaboration to Reduce Cost, Risk and Time across Whole Shopping Mall Management Lifecycles

Together with the industry, ISCM rides on the changing times and market trends. At our seminar on October 10, Mr. Elvis Li, CEO and Director of is. BIM Limited, the leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) consultant in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, talked about the application and advantages of Building Information Modelling (BIM), which is widely used in construction nowadays.

Elvis noted that BIM is a data-based model and its primary purpose is to predict future dimensions of a venue. A 3D simulation model for the construction is drawn from data analytics. The design is then evaluated for its effectiveness in meeting future needs and for areas of enhancement, which improves and speeds up communication between different units. It also facilitates supervision of the construction work, enhances management efficiency, and minimizes waste from revision of the design process.

Elvis began the similar with the example of Sky Tower in Tokyo by explaining the application of BIM for a complicated multi-storey shopping center. Elvis referred to the KITEC (Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre) as an example. In planning the conversion of some of the venue's floor space into a cinema, the use of BIM resolved the issue of low ceiling, while cost accounting for acoustic panel was also utilized. Drawing on the scientific data, the construction achieved much greater efficiency in cost and time reduction as well as decision making.

He added that BIM is used in many construction works in the mainland. The construction of Tencent Corporate Headquarters was grounded in a 3D simulation model of the towers, which minimises the risk of design revision after the construction is completed.

Review ISCM Seminar: Asset Management- Live Action: The Making of Popcorn

Popcorn is a favorite snack at the cinema as it is a symbol of entertainment. A new shopping mall situated atop of the Tseung Kwan O MTR Station, PopCorn, is a hub of cinema, trends, and unique food and beverage outlets for young consumers. The shopping mall was packed with visitors on its opening day in 2012.

How can one create a shopping mall legend like PopCorn? We invited Mr. Simon Wong, Chief Architectural & Project Manager for MTR Corporation Limited, to share his secrets of designing PopCorn. The talk was attended by more than 50 retail and shopping center management professionals. As the popular trend of online shopping poses a challenge to retail at shopping centers, Mr. Wong noted that PopCorn stresses the entertainment experience and creative marketing to attract young consumers.
